The Outing

About this outing.

Spend two nights camping on the rim of Empakai Crater, a hidden gem within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The main adventure is an hour descent through thick montane forest to the crater floor, where a deep alkaline lake often hosts flocks of flamingos. The cooler climate makes hiking and birdwatching a pure joy—raw, natural, and uncrowded.

Other wildlife you may encounter includes blue monkeys, buffalo, bushbucks, waterbucks, elephants, and hyenas. From the rim, the views are spectacular: Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, the Great Rift Valley, and even the snows of Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Evenings are spent camping under star-filled skies, sharing stories around the fire.
